Schoolhouse Cottage

Your Accommodation at American River

is just a minutes stroll from the wharf and boat ramp which is an ideal place to while away any spare time. Absorb yourself in the activities there – or be part of it with camera, or rod and line…

American River is a peaceful and unspoiled village nestled on a sheltered inlet which ultimately connects Eastern Cove with the aquatic reserve of Pelican Lagoon. It is a beautiful setting and is the premier harbour for boating and recreational fishing on the island. The calm waters are a haven for birds and fish, and ideal for your marine adventures, all year round.

Kayaking is ideally suited to this area – calm and pristine. With the fishing spots being only a stone’s throw away, take a line with you and discover how fish caught from a such a craft really do taste sweeter!

And being midway between Penneshaw and Kingscote, you are also well-positioned for exploring the rest of Kangaroo Island.

The Cottage – early last century it was once the local school and has been upgraded in a style sympathetic to the original.

Accommodation is for up to 6 people, in three bedrooms (queen, double and twin).
You will find a well-appointed kitchen, spacious eating area, cosy lounge, air-conditioning, and north facing outdoor patio with BBQ and views over “The River” and Eastern Cove.
There is undercover parking for 2 cars.

And we are pet friendly.

No boat? – why not throw in a line off the wharf for your dinner, or perhaps you might like to buy some freshly harvested local oysters.

Or you might like to try one of the fishing charters which leave from the wharf each day.

A rich and varied bird population thrives on both sea and land – from Pelicans and Swans, through Cape Barren Geese and Ibis, to the likes of the small and beautiful Splendid Blue Wren in the garden. The rare Glossy Black Cockatoo with its characteristic red tail panels is also an occasional visitor.

There are scenic walking trails along the American River  , where you can see Tammar wallabies, Possums, Echidnas etc. The wallabies graze the grassy verges of the town’s streets in the evenings.
